Karunanidhi welcomes PM’s speech

DMK leader M. Karunanidhi on Tuesday expressed happiness over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on cordial Centre-State relations at the inter-state council meeting, saying that the speech had strengthened the DMK’s views on federalism and State autonomy.
Mr. Modi had made a strong case for interaction between the Centre and state governments on various issues and had reiterated that internal security could not be strengthened unless the states and the Centre focussed on sharing intelligence.

Mr. Karunanidhi said the DMK’s stand on state autonomy and federalism was not given adequate attention all these years and the views of Mr. Modi and Chief Ministers from other states had sought to redress the grievances of various states. Mr. Karunanidhi added that he had demanded removal of the phrase “or otherwise” from Article 356 because the same word was used to dismiss the DMK government in 1991.
