Koramangala wall collapse: BBMP suspends 2 engineers

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike has suspended two engineers — Assistant Engineer Chennaveeraiah and Assistant Executive Engineer Savithri — for dereliction of duty, after a compound wall collapsed in Koramanagala, killing three masons, on Saturday. The labourers were working on the foundation at an under-construction commercial complex.

BBMP said the construction was being “illegally” done. The plan as well as design should have been approved before construction, but the construction had begun without BBMP approval. The stability of the earth had not been checked before constructing the building, resulting in the accident.
Srinivasa Reddy, Assistant Executive Engineer, BBMP, told The Hindu that the builders had neglected standard procedures while constructing the retaining wall in the foundation pit. “Usually sand bags are piled up against the loose earth as a buffer. The retaining wall is built after laying a column of sandbags. But here, no sandbag was used. Instead, they have tried to build the retaining wall directly after digging without checking for the stability, leading to the accident,” he said.
