District central library offers a digital experience

From now on, readers visiting the district central library need not search for books in large shelves. An e-book reader will help them get what they want at their finger tip.
The district library has introduced e-book readers, an electronic device, for the convenience of readers especially college and school students and research scholars.
The readers can have access to even rare books. They need not go to Connemara library in Chennai for these books. Now, everything is available in the district central library itself.
The State government has provided four e-book readers to the district library. With this device, a reader can access even 100-year-old books and also read more than 300 books through this reader.
“The State Government has been taking massive efforts to digitalise libraries in the State. With no cut in acquisition of printed copies of books, digital wave has been gathering momentum in government libraries. We have to respond to the changing ways of reading by readers and members.
“Young readers are comfortable with latest tech gadgets like computers, laptops, phones and tablets to read books and for quick reference,” said Ramachandran, Librarian, District Central Library.
The Government is willing to provide more e-book readers based on demand. “We will get more equipment shortly. With better screen readability and longer battery life, the equipment is designed to read e-books and periodicals,” he added.
Besides, the government had offered books worth Rs.4 crore to all libraries in the district recently.
On the whole, the libraries in the district have 24.56 lakh books catering to the needs of lakhs of members, he added.

A total of 62 branch libraries, 87 rural libraries and 24 part time libraries with 24.56 lakh members are under the control of the district library.
